ØThesepositions will be responsible for each managing and directing the activities ofhalf the department's 12-14 research veterinary technicians as a cohesivemanagement team.

Inaddition to identical responsibilities for management and mentoring ofveterinary technicians, each position will have different primary responsibilitieswithin the Veterinary Services Unit.

ØThisposition will have primary management responsibility for the technical servicesprogram and diagnostic lab while performing a support role for the primaryduties of the other position.

Weadditionally have a second position that will have primary managementresponsibility of clinical supplies inventory and order management, rodent healthsurveillance program, USDA species procurement and preventative medicineprogram, the controlled substance program, and pharmacy operations while performinga support role for the technical services and diagnostic lab programs.

ØTheVeterinary Technician Manager will also facilitate training and cross-trainingof technical staff in collaboration with the Training Team as appropriate toensure high quality and consistent veterinary care and service.

Job Responsibilities

·Thework duties for this position are complex and varied and will require theinterpretation of technical and detailed guidelines, policies, and procedures.Analytical ability is needed to gather and interpret data and information toaid in making decisions regarding refining methods, processes, and techniquesused to maintain high quality animal care and customer service.Innovation and critical thinking are anessential underlying part of the job duties described within this posting.

Required Qualifications

BA/BS degree plus at least 5 years of experience or a combinationof related education and work experience to equal at least nine years.

Directmanagerial experience of employees,>2year in duration

Preferred

Directmanagerial experience of bargaining unit employees

CVT certification

AALASTechnician Certification (any level)

Experiencewith regulations, guidance documents, and accreditation programs that are partof the research field (e.g. The USDA Animal Welfare Act and Regulations, ThePublic Health Service Policy and PHS Assurance, OLAW, The Guide, The Ag Guide, andAAALAC International Accreditation)

Excellentcommunication skills and experience working in auniversity setting with diverse staff, laboratory researchers andresearch models

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Possess communication and leadership skills needed to interactwith veterinary technician employees, professional staff, technical andadministrative staff, and animal care staff

Abilityto work collaboratively with counterpart in making consistent managementdecisions

Abilityto delegate appropriately as needed

Abilityto work and think independently to produce quality work and to encourage thesame quality work from employees

Interest in mentoring, teaching, and cross-training staff topromote professional growth of employees

A thorough knowledge of animal welfare regulations as described inthe PreferredQualifications

Working knowledge of generally accepted laboratory animalhusbandry practices and the ability to work collaboratively with operations and husbandrysupervisors and animal care technicians to promote advances in animal care

Excellent attention to details, analytical thinking skills,resourcefulness, ingenuity, project organization, and management skills

Computer skills necessary to learn and use current electronicsystems and to adapt to new software programs as they are implemented

Experience with conflict management and the ability to deescalatedifficult situations

Must be flexible, change-agile, forward-thinking, and motivated tosucceed in ’s mission

Duties/Responsibilities - VeterinaryTechnician Manager

Ø50% - Directsupervision of the veterinary technician staff

Superviseand direct the work of up to 8 veterinary technicians

·Plantraining/cross-training of staff in collaboration with the Training Team

·Ensurestaff implement proper and consistent clinical care for all species & areaswithin

·Createand maintain work schedules (including weekend/holidays) and work with team tocover work during call-outs

·Providesperformance feedback, both immediate and at annual performance reviews.

·Mentoremployees to further career goals and support continued educational andcertification opportunities

Resolve HR issues for labor representedemployees

Determineappropriate staffing levels and communicates needs with manager and counterpart

Coordinatepersonnel resources in collaboration with counterpart to cover needs of thedepartment

Hiringmanager for veterinary technician positions as needed

Co-leadthe veterinary technician team in high level customer service

Interactand work with clinical veterinarians to refine case management and provide highquality laboratory animal medicine and care

Ø5-10% - Clinicaland Technical Duties

Expectation to be a working manager and help perform clinical casetriaging, management, training and other technical duties whenstaffing is short

Weekend and after hours work may be possible

Ø5% - Developand maintain cross unit communication and relationships within

Maintaineffective communication with the Operations and Husbandry teams

Identifyareas for improvement for communication and bring ideas to managers and seniorleaders

Providementorship to resolve conflict professionally without the need for escalation

Ø5% - Otherduties as assigned by the manager or leadership

Unique Duties/Responsibilities – Position1

Ø25% - Technical Services Program management

Maintain and further develop the technical services program

Coordinate the veterinary technician team to fulfill all requestsfor technical services

Identify appropriate individuals within to performatypical services (e.g. vets, training staff) andallow veterinary technicians opportunities to train and develop these servicesin the future

CoordinateDiagnostic Lab services (both internal and external) including maintainingnecropsy space(s) and diagnostic equipment

Ø5-10% - Cross-trained to provide support and backupas needed for specialized services and programs

Rodent Health Surveillance and Quarantine programs

USDAcovered species procurement and preventative medicine program

Suppliesinventory program, ordering management, controlled substance program, and pharmacy operations

Unique Duties/Responsibilities – Position2

Ø25% -Oversight/Management of specialized services and programs for the VeterinaryServices Unit.

·Incorporateprocess improvements for each program with key stakeholders

·Overseethe following programs and assign responsibilities to staff as appropriate ineach area

·RodentHealth Surveillance and Quarantine programs

·USDAcovered species procurement and preventative medicine programs 

·Clinicalsupply inventory and ordering management, controlled substance program, andpharmacy operations

·Identifyopportunities for other specialized programs to further refine and strengthenveterinary services

Ø5-10% - Cross-trained to provide support and backupas needed for Technical Services Program and Diagnostic Lab services

Supportthe Technical Services Program in identifying employees to perform services

SupportDiagnostic Lab services

Encourageopportunities for all staff to learn new techniques from subject matter experts
